In Conversation with Vanessa Jackson & Piero Tomassoni

On 13 June, Piero Tomassoni will be in conversation with British painter Vanessa Jackson RA, whose work sits at the confluence of formal abstraction and feminist inquiry.

Presented in collaboration with Women Artists Art Week World (WAAWW), the discussion will explore the evolution of Jackson’s visual language from her formative years at Central Saint Martins during the rise of second-wave feminism to her ongoing investigations into spatial illusion, chromatic rhythm, and constructed perspective.

This talk offers a rare opportunity to reflect on a career defined by critical independence and formal innovation, and on a practice that continues to challenge the boundaries between painting, space, and ideology.

In tandem with Frieze London 2024, Artvisor hosted Fracture, an exhibition featuring works by four British abstract artists, including a selection of pieces by Jackson spanning from 1985 to 2022. The exhibition highlighted her enduring commitment to spatial complexity and rhythmic structure, reaffirming her position as a key figure in contemporary abstraction.

Tomassoni previously hosted a conversation with Jackson at Artvisor in 2023, celebrating her multi-decade career as a painter, educator, and pivotal figure in the London art scene. Rich in references to the history of modern and contemporary art, the exchange illuminated key developments in 1970s abstraction and the ongoing vitality of painting today.
