Alessandro Roma

Born in Manila, Philippines, 1992. Lives and works in London.

Through the media of painting, printing and drawing, Nicole Coson constructs a metaphoric narrative around the phenomenology of the paranormal. Ghost-like figures appear throughout her work, particularly in her Spirit Captures series. They emerge as bodies that are ever-changing but which cannot be fully grasped.

Coson’s practice is centred on printmaking materials and techniques. Her work attempts to connect the viewer with something simultaneously familiar and alien. The resulting experience is the unsettled nervousness of Freud’s Uncanny. She seeks the contemplation of something caught mid-flight, incorporating unexplained natural formations; shapes resembling animals in the clouds, Chinese scholar’s rocks or an arrangement of an ancient Japanese rock garden. These forms are captured by Coson in a brief moment in time where they are strangely perceptible. Working with a restrained palette, her works are often refined documentations of various fleeting encounters and experiences.

Coson graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins with a first degree honours in 2014. She was nominated for the Saatchi New Sensations Award and has since gone on to exhibit her work internationally, with solo exhibitions in London, Manila and Rome.
